Laboratory fees up
PA Hamilton i Government-paid fees to < private medical laboratories 1 will be increased 10.4 per ] cent, and an additional $1 ( million in lump-sum payments will be shared on the < basis of fees earned last ] financial year, ■ the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) an- i nounced yesterday when he 1 opened a Society of Pathologists’ conference in Ham- ’ ilton. The increases will lift pri- ; vate medical laboratory fees this year to about $22 million, compared with $18.4 million last financial year. Mr Gair said it had almost ]
come to be taken for granted that medical practitioners had full and free access to‘ laboratories to help them in diagnostic work. Laboratory services had developed in both public and private sectors, and it was the Government’s policy to maintain a balance between the two, Mr Gair said. However, the Government was looking closely at means of restraining expenditure in hospitals, including hospital laboratories. It was equally important that the Government examine private laboratory expenditure.
