I seldom speak of Church Affairs — I mind my own, and They mind theirs. Clergy, of more than one Persuasion, Differ in public, on Occasion. A Bishop pulls his Rank, that’s all — Earth doesn’t shake, the Heavens don't fa •: Between the Doctrine, and Dissent, Good Manners mark the Argument — Not MY affair, who wins, who loses, Who toes this Line, and who refuses, Since No-one’s gagged — unless he choose;! Four or five Hundred Years ago, When Winds of Change began to blow, The Church — was It the Church we know? — Dealt cruelly with dissenting Teachers, Friars, Philosophers, and Preachers — Among the famous Names we DO know, They burned one Giordano Bruno, And Savonarola: Bruno for Heretical Ideas, no more — The Other’s Preaching was a Lot too Of other Churches, other Ways? Much for the Pope, who told him not to — Ah well. Sir, those were terrible Times, And who are We, to judge their Crimes?
