Beneficiaries upset
Beneficiaries are upset about suggestions that the Department of Social Welfare may make random checks outside office hours, says the national president of the Association of Social Workers (Ms Mary Gray). Although there was always a small number of people who would try to cheat the system, beneficiaries needed to be re-
assured that they would not be hounded unnecessarily, Ms Gray said. Most complaints about beneficiaries proved to be groundless. The department was rein-< forcing the attitude that beneficiaries were “fair game” for the rest of the commune ity, while they were entitled to the benefits they received, she said.
