Reply to roll criticism

PA Wellington The Acting Minister of Justice (Mr Thomson) has answered criticism of the! state of the Northern Maori] electoral roll. An Auckland political; scientist and Labour Party member. Dr B. S. Gustafson, had said that 3000 of rhe ! 16.000 voters on the Northern Maori roll were probably not entitled to be there. This was because the names of about 20 per cent of Northern Maori voters had been carried forward [from 1975 without their I choosing .to be put on a : Maori roll, as they were required to do, he said. ! Mr Thomson said Dr Gus'tafson’s allocation ignored [the fact that the Electoral Office had been removing the ■names of all voters it could ■establish had not exercised 'a valid option. “As a result of this exercise, the number on the roll has reduced from 22,816 to the up-to-date figure of 16,059,” he said.
