Tide to Binning
Rickie Binning, the 15-year-old Wharenui swimmer, who has had a very successful year, was named Canterbury “swimmer of the year” at a carnival at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday ingMiss Binning, a breaststroke swimmer, started her run of successes last year. In July she travelled with her club to California where she recorded her best times, and set New Zealand records for both the 100 m and 209 m breaststroke. In California she qualified for the American national championships, and following on the heels of her fine performances was a selection in the Australasian team for the first F.I.NJL World Cup in Tokyo in September. During the New Zealand season she won six gold medals at the New Zealand age-group championships in New Plymouth, and one gold medal at _ the New Zealand championships in Dunedin.
