Essex Hospital closing
Sir, — I believe that the North Canterbury Hospital Board is not considering an expectant mother’s needs sufficiently. Only in her sixth month may she know for certain that she has a bed at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital. Her doctor may not be able to attend her, having already delivered his/her Christchurch Women’s Hospital quota of three babies per month. If that is the case, and she cannot afford otherwise, she will be referred to the clinic where she may never see the same doctor more than twice. Any prenatal psychological problems are less likely to be picked up under such a system and will no doubt emerge afterwards in exaggerated form, How then, in these circumstances, can she be expected, to face her delivery with confidence, an essential element of successful childbearing — Yours, etc., MA ANAND GITIKA, Hawarden.
