Moving of old buildings
Sir, — Nessie Via! (May 7) finds it distressing that historically valuable buildings are moved from their original sites and questions whether they can still be deemed historic. I for one would not like to see unnecessary dislocation of historic or architecturally significant buildings from their sites but in the case of the ConnaL Street house I think Mr and Mrs Croft should be congratulated on their initiative to retain this building. The District Scheme has long had the site zoned for industrial purposes. So, rather a relocated dwelling retained for residential use than; a bulldozed shattering of timbers to make way for a factory. I would hardly think that a Moncks Spur location ‘ would render the dwelling any less historic than its Woolston situation. Although it is listed as a historic building in the Reviewed District Scheme, the City Council does not suggest any form of protection ■ for this dwelling. In this case'.its best protection was relocation.- — Yours, etc., RICHARD JOHNSON. May S, 1980.
