Editor attacks Mrs Gandhi
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi An Indian newspaper editor has asserted that New Delhi has become a city of fear and suspicion under the rule of the Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi). In an open letter addressed to Mrs Gandhi and published on the front page of the popular Bomay weekly tabloid ‘Blitz,” the editor, R. K. Karanjia, alleged that after four months in office, Mrs Gandhi had failed to provide the effective government she promised. He asserted that a “virtual witch-hunt” was under way in India’s Intelligence Bureau and in
the Central Bureau of Investigation, “which smacks of political victimisation.” Mr Karanjia said a senior police superintendent alleged in the High Court he was being pressured to give false evidence against a retired judge who headed the commission under the previous government that found Mrs Gandhi and others guilty of various offences during her emergency rule in 1975. While Mrs Gandhi could not be held personally responsible for such “dark and mean deeds,” the editor said the cumulative effect on her national and international image could be harmful. ,
