Film crew escape attack
NZPA Bangkok The Veteran Australian journalist Wilfred Burchett, and a film crew escaped unharmed from a guerrilla ambush inside Kampuchea where he was being escorted bv Vietnamese troops, the “Bangkok Post” reported yesterday. The English-language daily said the ambush occurred on Wednesday near Kompong Chang, just 75 kilometres north of Phnom Penh, and said the lives of Mr Bur- ! chett and his party were saved only because of the heroism of the driver of the Vietnamese vehicle. It said the driver was severely wounded but drove the van'to the safety of a nearby army base. There was no way to identify the ambushers, the “Post” said, but the area is one where guerrillas backing the ousted Kampuchean leader Pol Pot operate. Mr Burchett was touring Kampuchea with an Australian documentary crew to film his reminiscences of the area, according to one of the crew members, Mr Jim Gerrand, who reported the incident to the “Post.”
