Steel suspensions
PA Auckland More than 140 workers at the Glenbrook steel plant were yesterday suspended, in a long-simmering argument about payments for noise levels at the factory. Also, said a company spokesman, about 125 more workers walked off the job soon after the suspension notices were issued. Workers at Glenbrook had sought the noise allowance, said a company spokesman, and New Zealand Steel, which runs the mill, had accepted that it would have to make-such a payment. Before doing this, he said,
the company wanted a survey to determine the different levels of exposure to noise and different payments for different workers would fallow. However, the staff concerned, said the spokesman, wanted all the workers involved to get the same payment, and there had been various stoppages Over the issue. The assistant secretary of the Auckland Engineers’. Union (Mr J. A. Butterworth) said the most recent stoppage was only last week, and lasted for 48 hours.
