Church school integrates
The first Roman Catholic school in Christchurch to be integrated into the State system will “sign up” on Tuesday. An integration agreement for Christ the King Primary School will be signed by the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby). A legal hitch delayed the agreement last week when Mr Wellington and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland (the Most Rev. J. Mackey) spoke in Christchurch on developments in school integration. At the meeting, Bishop Mackey said he hoped all Roman Catholic schools in New Zealand would be integrated within a year. He said he believed that the
Government would now review school incomes and 1 costs, and would give them just enough money to survive with the churches contributing what they could. The general manager of 1 the Catholic Education Board (Mr A. A. Craig) Said that eventually all Roman Catholic schools in Christ- » church would be integrated , into the State system. The biggest hurdle was'the time it took to process each school. The Christchurch diocese had 38 prim, ary schools and 10 secondary schools to be in-. tegrated. " Representatives of the Education Department, the Catholic Education Board, ‘ and the parish will attend ? the meeting in the school ’ hall on Tuesday afternoon.
