Bridge delays ended

Greymouth reporter Half-hour delays at the

ITaramakau road-rail bridge 'for repairs during the last two years have ended. The last coat of paint was applied to the bridge on Thursday, and the Railways Department foreman of work at Greymouth (Mr D. Rothsay) said he now expected only one or two minor delays while scaffolding was removed. The work on the bridge included redecking, repairs to the steelwork, replacement of thousands of rivets, sandblasting, and painting. Mr Rothsay said that the biggest problem had been the traffic. The work would have been completed in a year if the bridge had been a rail-only structure and without the need constantly to stop work to let traffic through. He believed that no more major work would be required on the bridge for about 10 years.
