Convictions on 41 charges

„:^ n , unem Ptoyed youth convicted of 41 charges involv*“g cash and property amounting to almost $3OOO was remanded in custody to “tay 19 f or a probation report and sentence when he appeared before Judge Bradford in the District Court yestetday. He is Braden Dean frees, aged 18, also known as Braden Dean Bustard. Bustard pleaded guilty to 20 charges of false pretence, seven of burglary, three of attempted burglary, and 11 of using documents to obtain a pecuniary advantage. The offences took place during February and March in Auckland and Christchurch.

Sergeant M. P. Caldwell said the offending began in February following the burglary of a house in Auckland from where property worth $750 and a cheque book were taken.

During February and March fraud squads in both centres carried out extensive inquiries as a result of which Bustard was spoken to late last month. He then admitted committing the series of offences which involved cash and property amounting to almost $3OOO. , .

Six of the burglaries took place in Christchurch during a week-end.

Sergeant Caldwell said compensation of $2830 was sought from the defendant and that the total amount of damage involved in the offending was $865.

RECEIVING ALLEGED An engineer charged with receiving was remanded on bail 'of $l5OO to May 12. No plea was entered by Neville William Hamilton, aged 29, who is alleged to have received a security sate and contents, together valued at $2230, from Leslie Charles Montgomery. < The alleged offence was isaid to have occurred on or iabout April 14. I ESCAPING CHARGE ; Peter Daniel Lumby, aged i 18, unemployed, was re'manded in custody to May il2 on a charge of escaping | from the Rolleston Detention 'Centre on May 3. ! No plea was entered by I Lumby. ! An alleged co-offender, iaged 16, appeared in the Children and Young Persons Court. MONTH’S JAIL A youth who presented a starting pistol at two women and a child in a car, and later at a pedestrian accompanied by a child, was sent to prison for a month. He is Brent Alexander Love,, aged 18, who initially admitted committing the two offences in February and later denied them. Love was later convicted after a defended hearing. . Police evidence was that Love fired the starting pistol from a car on both occasions and it made a loud report. ; The Judge said the dis- : I charge of such a weapon could have caused physical -i damage or shock, especially 'at a person in poor health.
