Mararoa fights back to win at Winton

PA Invercargill Mararoa, an , impressive last-start winner at the Riverton Easter carnival, ran right up to that form when he repeated the dose with a courageous success in the Boyles’ Handicap, main race and first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Winton Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Invercargill yesterday. Mararoa was ridden by top Takanini jockey, David Peake, who won the corresponding race on Tiva three years earlier. Peake was seen at his very best oh Mararoa, riding him with sustained vigour, after he had been headed, to regain the upperhand and score by a nose.

Mararoa had surged forward three wide with the leaders to take control at the 650 m. Her Greatest headed him early in the run home, but Peake made another call on Mararoa, which rallied gamely to win.

Her Greatest had two and a quarter lengths to spare from Deep Mystery, which was back beyond midfield at the 1000 m and made up a lot of ground. My Lisa Leigh, the three-year-old filly, was a plucky fourth, three-quarters of a length away.

A feature of the day was the off-course treble dividend of $17,490.55, paid by Noble Gem, Red Tape and Elvin Road.

Red Tape, a winner on the course in March, revelled in the easy footing when he led over the last 600 m of the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Dominion Breweries Handicap.

The winner of two of his previous four starts, Red Tape completed a double dividend of $225.65. The concession with Forest Gate ; was worth $17.95 for $l. Considering his form

1 background, Red Tape was 3 at the surprisingly lucrative - odds of 42 to one. He i always appeared to be reveli ling in the ground when he i got to the lead and, although i Forest Gate made a game at- * tempt to overhaul him, Red . Tape was too strong over r the last 100 m and scored by t two and a half lengths. Forest Gate was unchalr lenged for second, having 1 four lengths to spare from - Great Day, which unwound > a big run from well back in ; his field. Results:— I T.A.B. coda: SS !
