Hopes of breeding rare kiwis
PA Auckland The odds are that there is a male in the batch of s little spotted kiwis re* j cently moved from the’ wildlife reserve of Kapiti i Filand to the national Kiwi Centre at Otoro- ■. hanga. 5
But nobody Is sure, not even the director of the centre, Mr Barry Rowe. But he does know that he already has one female.of the species In the centre. “We don’t know the sexes of the latest batch,’’ Mr Rowe said yesterday. . This could be something of a problem because the centre hopes to study and, breed the rare species in captivity. The three little spotted kiwis, representing 1 per. cent of the world population of the species, were taken from Kapiti Island by representatives of the centre, the Wildlife Service, and the Department of Lands and Survey ear* Her this month. Mr Rowe said tM catching them In the dark,, apart from picking their sex, was no easy matter. “It is like pulling socks out of a drawer in the. dark, if you have ever tried that” He hoped to be able to sex the birds later this, week.
