New Papal nuncio

The Most Rev. Antonio Magnoni, a Vatican diplomat, will be the new Apostolic Pro-Nuncio (ambassador) to New Zealand. He will succeed the Most Rev Angelo Acerbi, who left New Zealand in September last year to become the pronuncio to Colombia. Early this year he was taken hostage in the Dominican Republic’s embassy in Bogota, where he is still held.

Archbishop Magnoni, a doctor of canon and civil law, will also be the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Fiji and the Apostolic delegate to the Pacific Islands.

Archbishop Magnoni, aged 61, was bom in Italy and was ordained in 1943; He will be based in Wellington, but it is not known yet when he will arrive in New Zealand.
