Arrests at protest
NZPA-Reuter Groton More than 200 people were arrested yesterday as demonstrators tried to disrupt the launching of America’s second huge Trident submarine, the Michigan, at Groton, Connecticut. The launching went off as scheduled, and no-one was reported .injured. The nuclear-powered Michigan, a $l2OO million, 118,750-ton warship capable of carrying 24 nuclear missiles, was launched after the traditional bottle of champagne was crashed on her bow by Mrs Margaret Nedzi, wife of Congressman Lucien Nedzi, of Michigan. \ Outside the shinyard, between 600 and 800 demonstrators either tried to rush the gates of the Electric Boat Company, shipyard, 1 where the launch was taking : place, dr tried to prevent jthose holding credentials from entering.
