Dr M. C. Crawley, formerly senior lecturer in zoology at the, University of Canterbury, has been appointed assistant director of the Wildlife Service and head of the service’s research section. D- Crawley, who was born and educated in Brit-

ain, joined the university staff in 1969. He had previously done research on opossums for the Animal Ecology Division of the D.S.I.R.

He is known for his research on the New Zealand fur seal in South Westland and on seals in Antarctica.
