Old Boys qualify for hockey grand final

High School Old Boys will beone of the grand finalists in the inter-district hockey league on June 8. When the fourth round of matches was completed yesterday, Old Boys were left three points clear of the other teams in Pool A with one round of games left. Old Boys’ opponent will be decided in the pool B match on May 25 between University and Harewood, both of which have four wins. Going on form so far this season, it is difficult to imagine that University will be beaten. Points after fourth round matches are:

Pool A: High School Old Boys 8, Sydenham-Cashmere

5, Redcliffs 4, Woolston 4, Timaru 2, Pegasus 1. Pool B: Univesity 8, Harewood 8, Selwyn-Hillmorton 4, Timaru Colts 4, Linwood United 0, Ashburton 0. Timaru yesterday gained its first win in pool A, at the expense of the Christchurch club, Pegasus. The Timaru side won a scrappy game, 2-1, the winning goal coming a few minutes before full-time. Pegasus played poorly in the first half, missing many traps and making bad passes. A series of mistraps brought Timaru’s first goal. Pegasus improved in the second half and Robert Wilso i scored from a penaltystroke, but minutes from the end Timaru received a pen-

alty-comer from which it scored. Timaru Colts gained its second win in three days in pool B. It beat the Ashburton colts team, 5-0, at Ashburton yesterday and now has to play Selwyn-Hill-morton on May 25 for third place in the pool. Goals were scored yesterday by Murray Thatcher (2), Russell Carwell from a pen-alty-corner, and Alistair Woodley and Chris Leslie from penalty-strokes. Ross Smith, the Timaru coach, said that he was very pleased with the competition the league has given his team in preparation for the Newmans-Adidas national colts tournament at Dunedin from May 19 to 25.
