Ernest likely to repeat at Westport today

Special correspondent Westport The Riccarton galloper, Ernest, looks set to make it a double for the meeting when he contests the Martin Handicap, feature race on the second day of the Westport Jockey Club’s centenary meeting today.

Ernest could hardly have been more impressive when winning on Saturday as he was wide for most of the journey and appeared to have a lot more in hand than his winning margin of a length would suggest. The track on the first day [was soft, but drying towards the end of the day’s racing. However overnight rain has taken its toll and the track will be heavy, conditions that Ernest relishes. Oldtimer never got into the act on the first day but it was his first outing for a fortnight and he will be all the better for the fun. He was in fine form over Easter and deserves another chance. Father Lou was another to disappoint on the first day when the best he could manage was fifth after' some solid placings at Blenheim. He is much better than that and it would, not surprise to see him dispute the finish here.

Meed was a late scratching on Saturday because of slight filling in a front leg and he would have to be considered if he were to line up here. Dolmar was another to impress on Saturday and could not be taken lightly on his first day placing. The second leg again looks like a repeat of the first day result. Sharebroker was most impressive when winning by five lengths and

it is hard to see the remainder of the field improve sufficiently to beat him. Sharebroker will again be ridden by Garry Phillips. The topweight Flying View went a good race on the first day for his placing as he was forced to race much handier than normal on the

tight Westport circuit. He has a lot of class and can never be left out of things. Big Dan went a top race for his place on Saturday. He was slow to leave the stalls but made steady progress round the field and finished determinedly. The northerner Shiftease was a big disappointment on Saturday after winning a double on a firm track at Blenheim. Plain Ruler went by far his best race for some time when fourth last start and has place prospects. Grand Poppa is another with a chance especially from his number one draw. The fields are:—
