Winter ritual under way
An annual New Zealand ritual, one that must be so ingrained as to he regulated not by calendar dates but by instinctive feelings, has occurred once again. For some 4000 Canterbury youngsters the beginning of the rugby season must rate only slightly behind Christmas Eve in excitement — and for countless administrators the headaches, and no doubt many rewards, have just begun.
The entries for the 1980 season are similar to last season, with 265 teams registered. And once again the contingent of referees appears to be adequate. In fact, rugby coaches owe the referees a vote of thanks — in most centres they have to referee their own teams’ games.
On the coaching side of things, once again the May holidays have been set aside for the Cantabrian Coaching
School to be held on May 12, 13 and 14 at Rugby Park. No doubt many well-known rugby figures will be present to lend their knowledge. Also in May, for the first time, an under-17 New Zealand side will be selected to play Australia at Lancaster Park on May 21. With the junior rugby administration in such capable hands no doubt the season will be as successful as past ones.
