Anzac Day
Sir, — If G. Field (April 24) regards South -Africa as fascist, he knows little of fascism. On Anzac Day I just deplore the unbelievable waste .of young lives, thrown away by the most inconsistent British, European and American politicians, and the utter futility of the Second World War, We entered the war supposedly to stop 'Poland being annexed by a totalitarian fascist power. Millions were then sacrificed, presumably> to keep Poland, Czechoslovakia etc., free from totalitarian control and domination by an outside power. Yet after six years of bloody war the West withdraws leaving not only Poland but many other previously independent states under the jackboot of totalitarian communism — fascism’s nastier first cousin. The people of Eastern Europe, as they counted their dead and saw their new Russian masters, surely thanked us. The victims of the last world war appear to have died to advance the power of the Soviet Union — little else. — Yours, etc;, E. SUTHERLAND. April 24. 1980.
