Aircraft cost
Sir, — We will pay $320 million for new aircraft. We are continually reminded of our poor economic state 2nd how we as individuals must “pull our horns in,” suffer earless days, etc., to save money. Can we, a country of
three million people, afford an international • airline? Would it not be more logical to scrap the international side of Air New Zealand, upgrade the domestic services to carry passengers at a reasonable cost, then open our airports to other international carriers; let them, fight to cut prices and fill their aircraft, while we sit back and collect the landing and servicing fees. Why not make New Zealand a duty, free port thereby encouraging even more tourists to visit here, which in turn earns us more in overseas exchange? It works for Fiji, why- not for us? — Yours, etc., R. T. CLARK. April 22, 1980. ■
