Five champions in N.Z. field
Two weeks ago it was noted on these pages that some of the giants in world ploughing would be taking part in the world contest near Lincoln on May 16 and May 17. Much the same could be said about the national championships on May 14 and 15. The field in the stubble and grass on those two days will see some of the great names in New Zealand ploughing in action again. S. M. Allison, of Milton in Otago, and A. J. Wallace, from Te Awamutu, who will be ploughing again, have both won the title three times, and in 1971 when ploughing in the world championships in England Wallace was runner-up to the world champion. Both are trying their luck .again as it is
now possible for a ploughman to compete in a world contest four times instead of three as was formerly the case. J. Thornton, from Momona in Otago, who is in the field again, was champion twice before in 1977 and 1978. D. M. Brown, from Temuka, is also a former national champion and G. Baird, from Wendon in Southland, won one of the two titles last year and he will be ploughing in both contests next month. Two other men in the national championships have represented New Zealand in world ploughing because they have been runners-up in national ploughing. They are I. Miller, also from Wendon, and N. Sheat, from Palmerston in Otago, and both were highly placed overseas..
