Avgas shipment approved
NZPA Washington The United States Government has again approved an emergency shipment of 10,000 tonnes of aviation gasoline (Avgas) to New Zealand.-
The trouble-plagued shipment is unlikely to reach New Zealand until September at the earliest, about 11 months after a top-level Government request for American help was first made,
The Mobil Oil Company, which claims to have lost at least SUS2 million because of the United States Government’s refusal Jo issue an export licence after twice giving verbal approval, now faces a temporary shutdown of its Avgas refining plant in Texas. “This means we will not be able to manufacture the fuel immediately.” said a Mobil official, Mr David Taylor, “We may be able to get other supplies, but we could not get a tanker away before August.” Mr Taylor said the whole exercise had been “disastrous" financially for Mobil.
