Chch union man for conference
A Christchurch trade! union official has been se-i leered to attend the Duke of Edinburgh’s Fifth Commonwealth Study Conference, which will be held in Canada next month. He is Mr G. D. Harding, secretary of the Canterbury Hotel, Hospital, Restaurant and Related Trades Union, one of seven New Zealanders to be selected. The others, all of whom work in tl.e North Island, are Messrs S. G. Morrison, of Alcan N..Z, Ltd; E. M. Searancke, of A.H.I. Glass Manufacturing Company; P. Carroll, of the Auckland Employers’ Association; E. .J Dickson, an official of the New Zealand Workers’ Union: E. M. Middlemass, of the State Services Commission; and Ms C. D. Fuller, a researchofficer in the head office of the Labour Department. The conferences are held every six years, and New Zealand’s participants are selected from nominations forwarded by the Federation of Labour the Empoleyrs’ Federation and the Government. This year’s conference will focus on the impact of industrial decision-making on people and their communities.
Mr Harding will be one of 300 participants from 30 Commonwealth countries. He intends to extend his overseas visit to include a study of an adult education programme in the United States, an executive meeting of the International Union of Food Workers in Geneva, and an examination of catering colleges in London and France. He will return to New Zealand in June.
