Petition against nudity
A petition against “nudity for profit” is being launched by the Christchurch Bible Lady, Mrs Renee Stanton. “I want a law against nudity going across this country the way it is,” she has said. Petition forms were being sent to Canterbury churches and service clubs. The law she envisaged would outlaw any nudity in stage plays, films, television, books, and magazines. Mrs Stanton said people were being exploited. There was no law to prevent it. The petition would ask for legislation making it illegal to exhibit the naked human body for entertainment and profit. ■' Only that kind of law would keep standards from slipping, and protect future generations from indecency, she said. There was no criticism of the human body as such, or its place “in the natural order,” she said. A May 9 deadline had been set for getting the petitions completed so they could be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. “I am just casting my bread upon the waters,” Mrs Stanton said. All she could do now was pray that people signed the petition.
