N.Z. money for ½M Ugandan orphans
Orphans left in Uganda by the regime of the former President, Idi Amin, will receive some of the $300,000 raised in this year’s National Council of Churches Christmas appeal. The director of Christian World Service (the Rev. Brian Turner) said that
there were more than 500,000 orphans in Uganda. The appeal had already reached a total of more than $290,000. He expected the total to be higher than $300,000 by the time counting was finished. The total raised last year was $254,000. The latest appeal exceeded its target of $275,000, and was 30, per cent up on last year.
Mr Turner said Uganda was one of 40 countries where the money would be used for relief and development projects. The priority this year was Zimbabwe. More than $130,000, from the Christmas appeal and a special appeal, had already been sent to Kampuchea. A $2OOO gift had been sent to Fiji for flood relief.
