Maori elders meet P.M.
PA Wellington Maori elders from all over New Zealand gathered in the Beehive yesterday for : an official welcome from the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon). The Occasion was described by Mr Muldoon as historic. “Maoridom has arrived at my doorstep. It is a rare moment in time when a thousand treasures come before me,” he said. The gathering was the climax of a. three-day kaumatua wanga (elders’ seminar) at Lower Hutt’s Waiw‘hetu Marae during which about 100 elders devoted I their “collective wisdom” to 'preparing guidelines on .'maoritanga for the Maori ■ Affairs Department. I While there were several light-hearted mOmc.its durin;: the colourful ceremony in the Beehi/e banquet hall, pointed references to grievances of the Maori people cropped up in speeches. Sir James Henare, of Kawa Kawa, referred to the “cool of the evening” touchin,.. the brows of the elders, whose ages ranged from 70 to 103 years.
“We pray our culture will remain in safe hands as we move into the future,” Sin James said. '
