Crime ring smashed
PA ' ■ Wellington I The police have smashed a Wellington crime ring spe- I cialising in car thefts and] car burning. .Nine people were arrested!,', this week'.! Seven were charged with offences relating to the burning of cars, and the police said a large, number of further charges would be laid. Detective Inspector Rangi Rangihika said a large number of cars had been wilfully damaged by fire in Wellington in the last nine months. Two of . the people arrested were the owners of cars which had been burnt. They had been charged with fraud on the insurance companies with which the cars had been insured. “It appears that people are having difficulty in selling large cars and are dis-
posing of them perhaps by this method,” said Mr Rangihika. “It looks like they were a fairly well organised team. It seems it is worth more to bum'a car than'to sell it and there are people around prepared to do it.”
