Gunpoint theft again at store
The assistant manager of the Kentucky Fried Chicken store in Riccarton Road (Mr J. Swindley) was recovering at home last evening after being robbed at gunpoint for :he second time in four months. “He is pretty upset, and he doesn’t want to talk about it,” said one of the shop’s employees. Mr Swindley was surprised by two masked men armed with a sawn-off shotgun when he walked into the store at 8 a.m. yesterday. The robbers forced Mr Swindley to open, the safe, tied him up with tape, and drove off in his car with $l3OO in cash. Mr Swindley managed to free himself a' few minutes after the robbery and called the police.
The stolen getaway car was found abandoned soon afterwards at the corner of Forbes Street and Beaumont Street. Sydenham.
A big team of detectives worked on the case throughout yesterday but no arrest had been made by late last evening. Detective Inspector N. J. Stokes said the robbers had worn white overalls and cl’th masks. Both were aged in their mid-20s and were about 182 cm (6ft) tall. No offender has been found for the last robbery at the store, on December 15 last year, when $3OOO was stolen. In that robbery, a masked man . walked into the store about 12.30 a.m., and threatened Mr Swindley and two cooks with a shotgun. The robber escaped after locking all three men in a cool store. Detective Inspector Stokes said the police had not discounted the possibility that the two robberies might be linked.
