45 bad boys

The two players sent off in Rothmans Soccer League matches last Sunday, Warren Fleet (Mount Wellington) and Jim Doherty (Gisborne City), take the number dismissed since the league’s inception in 1970 to 45. Neither player has been dismissed in league matches before, but Fleet becomes . the fifth player, after John Houghton, Tony Sibley, Bill de Graaf and Brian Turner — all internationals — to have been sent off while playing for the Mount.

Gisborne City players have been ordered off seven times in past seasons, with Les Todd and Ken Dugdale dismissed twice each, and Malcolm Knox, lan Sim and Bill Struthers once each. The dubious distinction of having been ordered off more times than any other player belongs to the former international, Sam Malcolmson. He was sent off three times and, interestingly, each time he was playing for a different club in the league.
