Shipping News N.Z. shipbuilding prospects slim
The prospects for new ship construction in New Zealand remain slender, according to the annual report of Lloyd’s Register ° £ Lloyd^ Ul ßegister’s ship repair and periodical surveys remained at a low level last year because of a reduction in the number of ships, but some important work was accomplished, the report noted. Among the 1979 achievements was completion of work on the replica of the H.M.S. Bounty, after which she was laid up. and work on the annual survey of the Maui A offshore platform. Lloyd’s industrial services activities in .New Zealand during l the year also remained at a low level, but did include shop inspection work on components for the Huntly power station, small liquefied petroleum gas bottles for general and automotive purposes, machinery for the aluminium reclaiming facility at Bluff, and transformers for Trinidad and Tobago and for Tasmania’s hydro-electric commission. _ .. In Australia, on the other hand, work in 1979 by Lloyds increased, because there was an improvement in orders for small specialised vessels such as tugs, supply vessels, a catamaran passenger cruise vessel, passenger ferries, and fishing vessels.
