Building permits continue to drop
PA Wellington Building permits in January continued to decline in the housing industry even though the value of the dwellings showed a slight increase for the corresponding period last year. A total of 987 new houses and flats were authorised in January,, a drop of 2.8 per cent compared with January 1979, according to the Department of Statistics. The value of January’s permits was $31.5 million, an increase of 11.3 per cent over the previous January.
Dwellings authorised for the year . ended January, 1980, was 15,550 compared with 19,183 for 1979 and 23,237 for 1978. A feature of the dwelling permits for the year ended January, 1980, was the 6.1 per cent increase in the numbers and a 12.9 per cent increase in the value of permits for alterations and additions to dwellings. The value of all buildings and dwellings approved for construction in January, 1980, was $93.8 million compared with $67.5 million for January, 1979.
