Puerto Rico blackout
I 'NZPA-Reuter Puerto i A previously unknown /group calling itself Grupo j Estrella has claimed responsibility for blacking out the island of Puerto Rico. I The blackout, which left \ three million residents without electricity, began on Saturday with an explosion in a I turbine. Power was restored to most of the island yesterday. I A man identifying himself j as a spokesman for Grupo ‘Estrella has telephoned a (local radio station and said [the sabotage was to protest
against alleged contract violations by the power company, and unsafe working conditions.
A spokesman for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, said he had evidence that the blackout had been caused by sabotage, but no firm conclusion had been reached.
The Estrella spokesman said the group had taken its name from Samuel Rodriguez Estrella, who died in January, 1978, in an alleged attempt to sabotage a power line during a strike.
