Sole post for union secretary
PA Wellington Mr W. J. Anton, national secretary of the Labourers’ Union. will relinquish his post on July 1 to work full time for the Local Body Officers’ Union. The two unions have had a common secretariat since 19,53. The break by the Local Body Officers’ Union conies after an expansion of membership and award coverage. Mr Anton has been associated with the two unions for 30 years. ,He took over the secretaryship of the Local Body Officers’ Union in; 1970, after the resignation in 1972 of Mr Peter Butler; became national secretary of the Labourers’ Union, “Since 1970 the localbody sector membership has doubled and is now about 6000. It is now.necr essary to negotiate 21 awards and agreements, compared with five in 1970,” Mr Anton said. “The executive of that union decided to set up its own secretariat. I was offered the post of secretary, and I have decided to continue solely in that position,” he said. Mrs Margaret Flanagan, secretary of the Wellington Labourers’ Union, will act as the union’s national secretary after July 1.
