Petition to circulate for S.I. government

South Islanders have a year to sign a petition asking for a referendum, to be held at the 1981 General Election to decide whether they want their own government.

The South Island Movement met at Oamaru on Saturday and resolved to circulate a petition asking the Government to give South Islanders the choice of having their own federal

government or continuing the present system of a central government. The petition will be passed to the public at meetings and gatherings during the next year. The chairman of the Canterbury branch of the movement' (Mr S. M. Andrews) said he was confident that the challenge offered by the Minister of Internal ’ Affairs (Mr

Highet) on television last year to obtain 200,000 signatures would be met. He said that a similar petition might be circulated in the North Island where it was apparent that people suffered because of a central government. The South Island Movement would welcome a North Island counterpart to assist mutual aims, Mr Andrews said.
