Avonside to fore in table tennis
The Avonside table tennis club made a good start to the winter season by winning the three section titles at the Canterbury club teams’ championships. In section A, the combination of Maurice Burrowes, Les Stewart and John Richards was too strong for Linwood in the final, winning three matches to one. Linwood’s only success came when Michael Hamel beat Stewart in straight games to win his singles match. Both Stephen Dixon and lan Urquhart were beaten in their singles matches. In the semifinals, Avonside beat the No. 2 Avonside team, 3-1, and Linwood beat the No. 3 Linwood team by the same margin. In B and C section • combined, Avonside 11, comprising J. Ma&on F. Chalk and P. Wright, beat Avonside I, 3-1, and in D section Avonside II beat Avonside I/”"*’ The winning team was A. Vernall, D. Caldwell and T. Hanrahan.
