World archery record

A Mid-Canterbury archer, Mrs Ann Shurrock, has received confirmation that her winning distance in the Australian - limitedflight championship was a world record for amateur women.

She sent an arrow 616.174 metres in the unlimited section using equipment lent by the New Zealand men’s cham-

pion, Bruce Winder, of Christchurch. Then, in the limited section, she sent the arrow 516.836 m, which was then thought to be a world record. Mr Winder received advice from the United States on Saturday that the limited distance was a world amateur record, beating a distance set by an American woman in

1978 by about 14m. The Australian Archery Association now has to apply to the world authority to have it ratified as a new

record. The two distances have already been confirmed as non-resident Australian and New Zealand records for amateur women.
