High tides expected
High tides, up to 2.4 metres at Lyttelton, can be expected on the Canterbury coast from April 15 to April 17, according to the Lyttelton Harbourmaster (Captain J. A. Barbour). “These are a normal thing, but there could be problems if we gel a low barometric pressure at the same time,” said Captain Barbour. Six weeks ago, more than 20 cars were caught by unusually high spring
tides at South Brighton. The Westport Harbourmaster (Captain R. Gower) has warned boat-owners and people with seaside property near Westport to beware of the high tides. Combined with a fresh flood in the Buller River, the tides coudl inundate 1 o w-lying river-mouth areas, said Captain Gower.
