Russian woman to get off?
PA Wellington Diplomatic , immunity seems likely .to allow a Russian woman suspected of shoplifting, to escape prosecution after an incident iii a Wellington suburban supermarket yesterday. ■ . The woman, who gave the title, “doctor,” was found by staff apparently taking goods from the Karori supermarket about 3.30 p.m. The police were called, but the woman said she was a member of the Soviet Embassy and as ■suchsnot liable to prosecution., 5 She: was spoken to and the embassy informed, , but no immediate action" was taken.
A spokesman for the police said last evening that members of the technical and administrative staff of the embassy and their families were free from arrest and detention under the Diplomatic Privileges and Immunity Act. Members of the service staff were immune only for acts performed in the course of their duties.
The police will today check the woman’s ranking at the embassy and decide whether to take further action.
