Tank contract won
The Christchurch heavy engineering firm of Anderson Engineering, Ltd, a subsidiary of the Ceramco group, has won a contract worth more than.s2so,ooo to make four bulk liquefied petroleum gas (L.P.G). 1 tanks that will be fitted to bogies and frames to serve the four main centres with L.P.G .requirements. Construction has . not started on the 23-tonne tankers, which .would replace the
existing 8-tonne capacity tankers, the Railways Department has announced. The design has been completed, and the tanks will be subjected to scrutiny by the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport. The Railways design engineer (Mr I. S. McDonald) said that it was planned to have the four tankers in service by the end of this year, / . ' The Press Association reports that the tankers are likely to be run by the soon-to-be-formed Liqui-Gas, an L.P.G. distribution company likely to include the BP New Zealand Industrial Gases, Offshore Mining,’ Rokgas, Shell, and Todd companies. Mr McDonald said the bogies and frames would be made at Railways workshops! The tanks would be
fixed, compared with the present maximum-capacity eight-tonne tanks which were demountable. The tanks would incorporate mineral wool t insulation, which would reduce the effect of heat on the contents in the event of fire. Mr McDonald said only four of the larger tanks were planned and there was no suggestion of increasing the number. They would be filled at Kapuni and would serve the larger centres. The Railways was also introducing special waggons t 6 carry the new tanks. These would replace the 14 waggons now used to carry the eight-tonne tanks which would be withdrawn from service. Introduction of the new waggons began about a month ago.
