Bail of $6000
Bait was set at $6OOO by Judge J. S. Bisphan in the District Court yesterday when Arthur George Manihera appeared on a charge of possessing canabis leaf for supply. It is alleged that Manihera aged 26, a cook, committed the offence on March 26. Bail was opposed by Sergeant K. J. Hurndell. The Judge granted the defendant bail of $2OOO with two approved sureties of the same amount.
Manihera was remanded to June 10 for a defended hearing. DEPOSITIONS
A salesman was remanded on bail to June 23 for the taking of depositions on a charge of theft. It ii alleged that the defendant received $l5OO from Ernest Robert Botting, and $3OOO from- Finance Discounts, Ltd on terms requirr ing him to pay $1517 to New Zealand Insurance Finance, Ltd, and that by fraduiently
omitting to do so he committed theft.
At the request of counsel (Mr M. F. McClelland) the defendant was granted interim suppression of his name. BOOKMAKING CHARGE Henrv Charles Gardiner, aged 39, a casual barman, was fined $750 after being convicted on a second offence of bookmaking when he appeared before Judge P. J. McAloon in the District. Court yesterday. Sergeant G. C. Jones said the defendant had been, observed taking bets in a Christchurch bar and had accepted bets from an undercover constable. $4OO FINE
Charles- Lemnos Dewes, aged 36, a barman, who also admitted, carrying on the business of a bookmaker was convicted and fined $4OO. Sergeant M. P. Caldwell spld the defendant had been observed accepting bets in a hotel bar, and had taken some from an undercover police officer.
