Firemen save flats
Quick action by firemen saved a.big wooden block of flats from destruction by fire yesterday afternoon.. Neighbours raised , the alarm after fire broke out in an upstairs- bedroom of . the flats, ' at- ■ 1000 Colombo Street,.about 12.50 p.m. . Two engines from headquarters.and St Albans stations responded to the call.
Firemen had to use breathing apparatus to-fight their way through thick smoke, but were able to restrict the damage to the bedroom :Where .the fire started. The . flats’-were unoccupied and in the process of being renovated, but the Fire Service does not believe that the fire was deliberate.
