Memorable trip
By J. J. BOYLE . Manawatu racing officials have done much to earn a reputation for their club as one of the friendliest anywhere.
Twenty-seven members of a group organised by Air New Zealand and “The Press” to go to Awapuni for the second day of the Manawatu centennial meeting were among special guests of the club at a cocktail party on Friday night. On Saturday women members of the South Island group were presented with rosettes and entertained by NEW ZEALAND METROPOLITAN TROTTING • CLUB WITHDRAWALS for all events on the final day of the above club's Easter Cup meeting to be held on April 5, must be received by 3 p.tn. wives of stewards of the club. The locals did their best to hand on the information necessary to steer the visitors towards the pay-out queues, but few, if any did it better than the group’s friendly colourful bus driver, who announced to all that morning that Diwali was the only possible winner of the highweight: he had dreamt that would be the result. Diwali-won, and with no more -than one race over one of the South -Islanders was winning $3OO. After landing the course treble and the T.A.B. double even -the popular Air New Zealand tour leader, Mr John Butcher, must have ■ been wondering if he had jumped the right way when he joined the ranks of trotting owners. .Mr Butcher has been a good winner on each of his three trips'Jo Awapuni.
