Labour would stop tour
PA Wellington If Labour was the Government next year it would stop the proposed Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand by withholding visas said the leader of the Opposition, Mr Rowling, last evening. “As the situation stands at the moment, there is no indication that we should change our policy,” Mr Rowling said.
But he said that Labour would “closely watch” developments in South Africa. Earlier the Deputy Prime
Minister. Mr Taiboys, made, it clear that the Government would not intervene by withholding visas.
“We will not interfere with passports or visas,” Mr Talboys was reported as saying. Mr Taiboys said “however that at the appropriate time” the Government would remind the New Zealand Rugby Union of the Gleneagles Agreement, under which Commonwealth countries have agreed to dissuade sporting organisations from playing with South Africans.
