Prime Ministers report card

Sir, — I would agree with Mr Creel (March 21) that Mr Muldoon should not interfere with' wage rises were we all responsible people- The working class (most of us) has had its living standard reduced mainly by changes in the world economy, which no government can control; Any wage rise, no matter how reasonable, must cause inflation if not supported by increased production. With no economic growth it follows that real wage increases obtained by strike tactics for nd extra work are at the expense of the rest of us. As for savage taxation, given huge budget deficits (last year over $1,500,000,000) there is little scope for reducing total government revenue require-

ments. The financing of these deficits is if not actually, inflationary, and debilitating to the economy. Perhaps the answer is a Marxist dictatorship; it could be better than cutting our throats. — Yours, etc., F. ROBINSON. March 23, 1980.
