Twizel scrapers off to U.S.

When the 26,456-ton Austral Moon arrives in Lyttelton next month from Papeete, she will take on the eight barges left behind by the Austral Lightning last month. One will carry two big earth scrapers from Twizel. The other seven barges will be returned empty to the United States. The Austral Lightning arrived at Lyttelton on February 22 and sailed the next day, leaving behind the eight barges loaded with soda ash from Tacoma, Washington, U.S.A. After the barges had been emptied they occupied various berths around the port, mainly at the No. 2 jetty. The two earth scrapers had been used at the Waitaki hydro scheme project at Twizel for several years. It is believed that they have now been sold by their owner, a private contractor, and are destined to be unloaded at San Francisco. Both the Austral Moon and the Austral Lightning are L.A.S.H. (Lighter Aboard Ship) vessels, incorporating huge cranes for the handling of barges and other exceptionally big and heavy items. ARRIVALS Mykonos (11.12 a.m.), 18,674, Bahrain (U.S.S.).
