Convictions for break-in
Two men were convicted by Mr N. L. Bradford, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a joint charge of breaking' and entering a flat in Sherborne Street, from which two rifles and a shotgun were amongst goods stolen, oh the morning of December 3.
The defendants, Neil Frederick Davis, aged 27, unemployed, and David Owen Williams, aged 23, an unemployed labourer, had denied the charge of breaking into the flat, occupied by Anthony John Baker, with intent to commit a crime.
In convicting the two the Magistrate said he was satisfied that, on the evidence produced by the prosecution, it was the . two defendants who broke into the flat and took the firearms and other items produced.
He remanded the two in custody to April 1 fop a probation report and sentence. A charge against Williams of resisting Detective B. T. Bateman in the Central Police Station when being interviewed in connection with the burglary was dismissed. The Magistrate said this was more consistent with an assault rather than resisting.
On a further charge of assaulting Patrick Gamble on November 15, Davis pleaded not guilty and was remanded on bail to May- 20 for a defended hearing. The burglary charge had been part-heard earlier this month, and was adjourned to yesterday for completion. Sergeant A. Cook prosecuted, and Mr N. P. Chapman appeared for both defendants.
