Not free for long
An off-duty prison officer was surprised when he came face-to-face with a woman prisoner on Colombo Street yesterday afternoon.
The officer had a strong suspicion that the woman was still supposed to be a guest of Her Majesty, and grabbed her. “A patrol car was going past just at that moment. She was back in the cells in no time,” said SeniorSergeant J. Reilly. The woman, aged 32, had escaped from Christchurch Women’s Prison at Templeton between 3.30 p.m. and 4 p.m. yesterday. She is serving a sentence of 21 years for armed robbery. The woman spent last night in the cells at the Central Police Station, and will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of escaping from custody.
